*There is evidence that this message was not actually written by Halsey, who by that hour had gone to bed after nearly forty-eight hours without sleep, but by one of his staff. This is irrelevant, however. Officers frequently rely on their subordinates to draft reports and messages in their name, just as presidents and other executives do, but they always do so with the understanding that it is they who bear the responsibility for what is written, not the subordinates. Although Halsey, the man, may not have actually chosen the words for this or any other message, it is Halsey, the admiral, who, for all intents and purposes, did.

*Once the number one (ichi) plan had been put into effect it became the plan, and the modifier was dropped.

*Lieutenant John F. Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps medal for his actions in saving members of his crew after their PT-109 had been cut in half by a Japanese destroyer in the Solomons.

*“What can go wrong, will.”
